Welcome

Hey everyone! Welcome to the Student Health 101 blog :)

I am Julia and I am one of the three campus correspondents at UMASS Boston. Our job is to spread the word about current health issues and gain feedback from YOU through video interviews that are published in UMB's subscription to the online magazine, Student Health 101.  This is a fantastic resource for college students.  The articles cover a variety of topics that range from nutrition to anxiety to workout plans.  There are also tips on sleeping better, career planning, relationships, and much, much more.

We created this blog to let everyone know about what is going on in the Health Education Department of University Health Services (let's just call it "the office") while we are doing research for our jobs as Campus Correspondents. We can let you know what our interview topics will be and share some information on it.  We will also be reacting to the answers you give us with our own opinions and some hard facts, as well as analyzing the data we receive.

Novemember's topic was "Social Media," and we asked students about their social media use and the positive/negative affects of it in their lives.  This was especially interesting to me because, as a 24 year old, I haven't caught on to much of the new technology.  I have a Facebook account and I have a phone that can make calls and text.  I recently purchased a laptop but I usually forget that it is portable and it stays on my desk home most of the time.  That's not to say I don't appreciate technology, though.  It's done wonders for modern medicine and has created millions of jobs.  It's also nice to always be reminded of someone's birthday and it's great to be able to keep in touch with people.  This blog wouldn't be in existence without it.

This was also the start of the "Online Disinhibition Effect." Here's an interesting article on it:

Online Disinhibition Effect

December's Topic is "Gender and Alcohol" so stay tuned for some thought's on that.
